Working with Litfest again – this time on the Castle Park Stories project.
I was commissioned to write an audio piece for the project exhibition held at The Storey and Lancaster Library.
The website says:
Lancaster’s Litfest was one of the first groups in the UK to receive a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) All Our Stories grant. The Castle Park Stories project was given a grant to inspire local residents to uncover the hidden stories in the area around the castle.
The project encouraged local people to investigate Lancaster’s rich history and develop writing around a site of their choice. In January and February 2013, project participants took part in a series of research visits and workshops. Working with a historian, writers, a photographer, archivists and designers, participants uncovered stories and explored ways of sharing them. Their work is presented on this website and in an exhibition, which first showed at the Storey at the end of February 2013. The exhibition showed at Lancaster Library between March and May 2013 and at Morecambe Library between June and September 2013.
This soundscape is inspired by historical and literary texts that project participants came across during their research.
It features extracts from:19th Century newspapers, Notes on a Visit Made to Some of the Prisons in Scotland and the North of England in company with Elizabeth Fry by Joseph Gurney, Memoir of the Life of Elizabeth Fry, The Journal of George Fox, ‘The Lazy Tour of Two Idle Apprentices’ by Charles Dickens & Wilkie Collins, Lancashire Stories by Frank Hird, ‘The Insolvent Debtor: A Lay of Lancaster Castle’ by Anon 1861, Poem by George Crabbe, ‘Sonnet Suggested by the View of Lancaster Castle (On the Road from the South)’ by William Wordsworth, letters from The Northern Star 1840, ‘Recollections and Reflections of Gideon Shaddoe Esq IX’ Signed by “Silas Seer” from Hood’s Magazine and Comic Miscellany (Silas Seer is purported to be a pseudonym of Lancaster-born scientist Richard Owen).
